Are Snail Mail Birthday Cards a Thing of the Past?

One might think that the age of sending birthday cards is dead. However, this is far from the truth particularly since the dawn of personalised cards. Thanks to the relatively recent phenomenon that is the Internet, the thought of using snail mail is becoming more and more absurd. Initially birthday cards were replaced by sending someone an e-mail with an animated greeting.

As always, Moore’s law means that no one has seen an animated greeting card in years and instead, the age of personalised cards being sent to your doorstep has arrived. Why, when you do most of your shopping from the comfort of your own home, would you go to the post office, pick out a card, write it and send it when it can all be done online, with much more personal and meaningful results?

Some people, however, still prefer the low cost and convenience of having a drawer full of generic greetings cards ready to send when needed. Of course, personalised greetings cards will never fully replace the emergency stash of birthday cards, particularly for the older generation who are unable to use a computer and for those who simply don’t wish to spend the extra money getting a card that has been personalised.
